Breast Reduction surgery, also known as a Reduction Mammoplasty, is the treatment of choice for women having problems related to large breasts and who desire to have them decreased in size. Enlarged breasts can be associated with one or more of the following:
• Chronic neck, back and shoulder pain
• Poor posture
• Skin rashes under breasts
• Deep grooving of the shoulder, pain and irritation from bra strap pressure
• Restrictions of physical activities
• Self-esteem problems
• Difficulty in finding bras that fit comfortably and with good support
• Limitations in finding clothes that will fit or that one would like to wear
The procedure for breast reduction entails the removal of excess skin and breast tissue, reshaping and re-elevating the remainder of the breast including the nipple to a more normal position. The nipple-areola is usually also reduced in size so as to be more proportionate with the smaller breast. Incisions are most commonly in the shape of an anchor or inverted T, extending from around the nipple, then down to the crease at the lower portion of the breast and then along the crease.
The surgery is most often done as an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia. Postoperatively, the discomfort is fairly mild for most and is well controlled with pain medication. In fact, many patients note that they feel better right after the surgery than they had prior to it. You can resume most normal, non-strenuous activities within a few days.
A vast majority of women undergoing this procedure were quite happy in choosing this course of action. They noted that the breast reduction surgery resolved most, if not all, of their symptoms. In fact, they are among our happiest, most satisfied and appreciative patients.
