Does Breast Reduction Surgery Leave Visible Scarring?

Breast reduction surgery, also known as a reduction mammaplasty, most commonly involves anchor-shaped (inverted-T) incisions. These extend from around the areola, then down to the bottom of the breasts and along the crease. These are not short incisions. There will definitely be visible scarring of varying degrees depending on various factors.
A far less commonly used approach is the “lollipop” one, where the incision extends from around the areolas, then down to the crease. There is no horizontal scar.
With proper care and guidance, you can take steps to reduce visible scarring and maximize the aesthetic outcome for either technique.
Tips to Minimize Scarring During Breast Reduction Recovery
Ultimately, the visibility of your postoperative scars depends on several factors, including your body’s natural healing response, genetics, underlying medical issues, surgical technique and skill, compliance with your care instructions and more.
Here are some tips to help minimize breast reduction scars and support the healing process as your final result settles in:
- Avoid strenuous exercise and activities as outlined by Dr. Turkeltaub (or your plastic surgeon). This can be six to eight weeks, though certain activities may last up to three months.
- Do not smoke cigarettes, marijuana or vape starting at least four weeks prior to surgery and until at least four weeks post-surgery – preferably even longer.
- Wear your surgical bra or compression garment as instructed.
- Follow nutritional guidelines as instructed, including appropriate protein and vitamin intake.
- Avoid direct sun exposure on the incision sites and use a high SPF sunscreen when appropriate.
- Use the silicone gel or tape as instructed, whichever was recommended for you.
- Watch for signs of any healing issues including sutures coming through the skin. If there is any question whatsoever, contact Dr. Turkeltaub (or your plastic surgeon).
Every patient’s recovery timeline is different, so recommendations will be tailored to your specific situation. If you have any questions – ASK. Also, don’t follow some random online advice.
