More People Got Breast Revision in 2020 Than in 2019. Find Out Why?

3 Minute Read:

Breast enlargement remains one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures for women in the United States. It is a great way to enhance the size and shape of the breasts for a more attractive, desirable and even youthful appearance.

While a majority of women continue to enjoy the results and benefits of their augmented breasts, some want or need to consider breast revision procedures for a variety of reasons.

According to the National Plastic Surgery Statistics, there has been an eight percent increase in the number of breast implant removals between 2019 and 2020. Some doctors expect to see this trend continue in 2021.

What Are the Most Common Reasons for Breast Revision Surgery?

There are several reasons why a woman would consider undergoing breast revision surgery. Among them include:

Desire to Change the Size of the Breasts

While many women remain satisfied with the size and shape of their implants following their breast augmentation, others have a change of heart. Some choose to downsize their implants, whereas others desire to go bigger.

There have also been cultural changes in breast aesthetics that are influencing some to seek out smaller-sized implants. This is a sharp contrast from the earlier years when the majority of patients opted for larger, even oversized implants.

With breast revision, patients can change the size and, to some extent, the contour of their breasts to their liking. This can be accomplished with larger or smaller implants, depending on their goals.

Capsular Contracture

A far less common reason for breast revision surgery is capsular contracture, a condition that results in the hardening of the natural scar tissue that surrounds the implants. This causes the breasts to look and feel hard and may even lead to breast distortion, pain and discomfort.

The procedure usually performed to treat this issue is a capsulectomy. This entails either the partial or complete removal of the scar tissue surrounding the implant.

Removal of Breast Implants

Some women decide, for whatever reasons, that they no longer want their breast implants. In these situations, the implants can be removed fairly easily.

A breast lift may be recommended if there is significant sagging after the implant removal.

Correction of Unsatisfactory Results

Sometimes, patients may be unhappy with their prior augmentation surgery results or want to address problems like rippling or noticeable asymmetries. Breast revision can correct such complications to yield an improved result.

Exchange of Breast Implant Type

It is common for patients to exchange saline breast implants for silicone implants, which better mimic the natural breast tissue.
