Breast Asymmetry

Breast asymmetry exists when a woman’s two breasts are not identical, mirror images of each other. The reality is that this is true of essentially all women’s breasts. Differences can be in shape, size, projection, skin tone, and even location on the chest wall as well as nipple location, size, shape, and projection.

Usually, these disparities are not that substantial or important enough to lead to emotional or physical related issues. It is truly amazing how many women are stunned to learn, during their consultation with me, that their breasts are actually different in one or more ways. (Fortunately, I believe that these same women are none the worse with this revelation and continue on in life without missing a beat!)

Most of the time, it is when there are major differences between the two breasts that anxiety, decreased self-esteem, and other emotional issues and physical concerns usually manifest themselves. It can be very difficult in these situations to find bras, clothing, and swimsuits that fit correctly, that don’t reveal the underlying asymmetry, and that are sexy and complimentary in appearance.

For women who want to reduce their breast asymmetries as well as these collateral issues, I may be able to offer a plastic surgery solution to address specific needs. During your consultation, I will precisely evaluate your unique situation, address your concerns, and formulate recommendations that would best help you achieve your goals.

Breast Augmentation

Patients who either do not want to lose any volume from their existing breasts or who want to be larger in size may benefit from a breast augmentation using breast implants. One way this can be performed is by using two different-sized and/or shaped implants in order to create breasts that are both larger in size and closer in overall appearance.

In some special situations, considerations can be given for fat grafting, whereby fat is harvested and injected into the breasts to adjust for differences in size and shape.

Breast Reduction

For patients who do not want to add size to their breasts, the larger breast can be reduced in volume to match that of the smaller one by means of a breast reduction. This surgery entails the removal of excess breast tissue and skin in order to reduce the size and improve the shape of the breast. In rare situations, this size reduction may be able to be accomplished by liposuction (a liposuction reduction) of the larger side.

When both breasts are much larger than desired, a bilateral breast reduction can be performed, in which significantly more tissue is removed from the larger side.

Breast Lift

Patients who have one breast that is noticeably larger and projects lower than the opposite breast may be good candidates for a breast lift along with a small reduction. This procedure involves the removal of lax, excess skin and some breast tissue along with reshaping and lifting the breast to a higher position.

Combination Procedures

Some breast asymmetries may need to be addressed using more than one technique in order to obtain a more desirable outcome. This could include combinations such as a breast lift and augmentation on one side and a reduction on the other. Fat injections may also play a role in these situations.
