Breast Augmentation Incision Options

Breast augmentation is a plastic surgery procedure that can be tailored to meet the unique needs of each patient. There are multiple options for implant type, shape, texture, and size, and the implant may be placed either over or under the chest muscle to achieve the patient’s desired breast feel and appearance. Another important decision to make regarding breast augmentation is the incision placement.

I regularly perform breast augmentation using one of three acceptable incision options (inframammary, periareolar, or transaxillary), which have the following benefits and disadvantages:

Inframammary

Periareolar

Transaxillary

Location Along the fold between the lower breast and the chest Along the lower half of the nipple where it borders the normal-colored skin Within the fold of the armpit
Scarring Usually fairly inconspicuous Not generally very unnoticeable Not generally very noticeable
Limitations on implant type None Silicone implants may not be available for women with smaller areolas Large silicone implants and anatomic shaped may be problematic
Risk of affecting nipple sensation Minimal Increased Minimal
Risk of developing contour irregularities/ asymmetry Lowest Increased Increased
Risk of developing capsular contracture Lowest Increased Increased
Risk of implant malposition Lowest Increased Increased

Although there may not be one “correct” incision location for everyone, some incisions offer benefits or provide limitations that can be more significant or important to particular patients. Because the breast implants are inserted through the incision, the implant type, style and size may restrict the usage of the transaxillary and/or periareolar incisions. A predisposition to form more prominent scars may also impact the choice for incision placement.

At my Arizona plastic surgery practice, I offer breast augmentation surgery that is customized to meet the individual needs of each patient. During your consultation, I will also discuss the pros and cons for each incision location and make recommendations to allow you to determine the best option for your procedure.
