Breast Lift May Decrease Bra Size
Breast lift surgery is an increasingly popular procedure, with over 90,000 breast lifts performed in 2013. This surgery lifts and reshapes the breast tissue and removes excess skin to create a more attractive breast shape and position. If necessary, this procedure can also reduce the size of enlarged areolas and elevate the position of the nipples and areolas.
As the Breasts Go Up, Cup Size Goes Down
According to a recent study published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), women who undergo breast lift surgery often end up wearing a smaller bra size after the procedure. For this study, 20 women who underwent breast lift surgery were asked to report on their cup size five years later. This study found that, on average, breast lift surgery results in the need for a bra that is one cup size smaller than the size worn before the procedure. All the women of this study also reported that they were satisfied with the results of their breast lift surgery.
Smaller Bra Represents ‘True’ Cup Size
Researchers attribute this reduction in cup size to the change in the shape of the breasts rather than an actual reduction of their size. As the breasts begin to sag, the breast tissue stretches and takes up more space, and patients with sagging are generally more comfortable in a larger bra. During breast lift surgery, this tissue is reshaped and condensed to fit it’s ‘true’ cup size, and excess skin is removed. It is for this reason that analysts believe the patients change to a smaller, more comfortable and accurate bra cup size.
Breast Lift and Augmentation
Breast augmentation is combined with breast lift surgery for patients who not only wish to correct their sagging breasts but also want to either maintain their volume or increase their cup size. The breast tissue is reshaped, implants are inserted into the breast pockets, and excess skin is removed. The results are more youthful, perky, and attractive breasts.
In the overwhelming majority of breast lifts that I perform, breast implants are inserted as well. This allows the best opportunity of attaining more voluptuous appearing breasts.
