How to “Style” Your New Breasts After a Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is an exciting and potentially life-changing procedure. For many women with naturally small breasts, breast augmentation surgery allows them for the first time to be able to wear some clothing styles and look how they want to look.

While fashion is subjective, we want to celebrate this exciting new time by discussing clothing that can complement your new, voluptuous figure.

Bras for Breast Augmentation

Shopping for bras when you are unhappy with the size of your breasts can be frustrating and even depressing. Furthermore, each bra brand and style can and does vary, making it even more difficult and time consuming searching for that perfect bra. Adding to this frustration is the fact that cup sizes are proprietary so that, for example, one company’s “C” cup fits the same as another company’s “D” cup.

Finding bras for your new breasts might be one of the first things you do on your breast augmentation journey. Realize, however, that the size and shape of your breasts will change as your breast implants “settle” and swelling subsides.

It is important to wear a bra that has the right amount of support—too little, and your breasts may feel heavy and increase tension; too much, and it can push your breast implants up and cause them to become misshapen and “overwhelming.” Your plastic surgeon can advise you regarding the best bra following your surgery.

Once you are fully healed, seeing a bra professional for a proper fitting may be helpful. You can visit a lingerie store or a boutique that offers this service to help you find the right size and fit for your new breasts. Realize, though, that many of these “bra professionals” are not necessarily as helpful or knowledgeable as you may hope for. We have seen this issue with our patients many times over the years.

You may wish to invest in multiple bras, so you have options. Be sure to pick up a good strapless bra, too. While it may be tempting to go braless right away, your breasts will need good support for a while.

Tops and Dresses to Fit Your New Breast Implants

While it may be easy to focus on the changes to your breasts, you may notice that your body proportions have also changed. Increasing the size of your breasts will have an impact on your body type that you might have to get used to. Pay attention to how you look overall as you start shopping for a new wardrobe. You might be surprised to see that your tastes have changed!

Many women with naturally smaller breasts are frustrated with how difficult it might be for their breasts to “hold up” strapless tops and dresses. If you’ve just undergone breast augmentation, this won’t be the case! Try on that strapless dress with the sweetheart neckline you’ve been eyeing.

Another good rule of thumb is to try form-fitting tops and dresses. Your tops will hang differently now; a loose-fitting blouse may look bulky or boxy as it accommodates your larger chest.

Keep an eye out for tank tops that have more substantial straps. You need to make sure your breasts are supported in whatever you wear.

Breast-Complementing Bathing Suits

Whether a bikini or a one-piece, bathing suits almost always complement larger breasts (as long as you feel comfortable and confident wearing them!).

In the earlier stages of your breast augmentation recovery process, it’s not advised to wait a little while before you head out to the beach or pool in a bikini. Your upgraded breasts will need more support than a two-piece can provide. A retro-style bathing suit is not only cute but also typically has an underwire and provides more padding to give you some much-needed support.

Once you’re fully healed, the world is your oyster. Halter tops are a great option—they provide support and look fantastic.

Triangle tops will almost always look great as you can fill them out nicely and adjust the string ties to suit your size.

Strapless tops are another option that might not have been as comfortable to wear previously with smaller breasts.
