Plastic Surgeon in Scottsdale Highlights What to Expect After Breast Lift Surgery

Dr. Steven H. Turkeltaub of the Arizona Center for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery discusses recovery, scarring and results following mastopexy.

Scottsdale, AZ — “Medically referred to as mastopexy, breast lift surgery is a popular procedure designed to elevate the breasts to a more natural position on the chest wall,” writes Scottsdale plastic surgeon Steven H. Turkeltaub, MD in a recent blog post on his website. Based on the patient’s unique needs and goals, he goes on to note that operation can entail the removal of excess skin, a reduction in the size of the nipple-areola complexes and the reshaping of breast tissue for a more youthful, aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Following a mastopexy, Dr. Turkeltaub explains that a circumferential dressing is placed on the chest to help provide comfort and support. After a few days, the dressing is then replaced with a supportive bra, which is something that he recommends his patients wear on a regular basis thereafter in order to help slow the inevitable drooping that will continue with the passage of time.

Dr. Turkeltaub says women who underwent breast lift surgery without implants can generally expect fairly mild discomfort during the initial stages of recovery, though patients who opted to combine their procedure with breast augmentation may experience a little more moderate level of pain. Most individuals are able to return to non-strenuous jobs and/or school within about five to seven days, he adds, but more vigorous activities such as sports and aerobic exercise should typically be avoided for around three to four weeks.

Regarding the final appearance of the breasts, Dr. Turkeltaub notes that while a mastopexy elevates and reshapes the breasts for a rejuvenated appearance, the procedure alone does not augment their size. “In fact,” he states, “since the operation makes the tissues more compact, the breasts may actually appear a bit smaller than expected following the procedure.” Consequently, a majority of his patients also elect to undergo a breast augmentation concurrently.

Dr. Turkeltaub explains that the incisions necessary for skin excision and tissue contouring for a breast lift means that there will be some form of scars present. However, he notes that great care is taken to ensure all incisions are made – and heal – as inconspicuously as possible and that any reservations patients have about scarring are typically far outweighed by the final outcomes achieved through mastopexy surgery.

Ultimately, Dr. Turkeltaub states that breast lift surgery can be an extremely rewarding procedure for the right candidate though he stresses the importance of seeking a board certified plastic surgeon who is highly experienced and talented in performing the procedure which can help increase one’s odds of obtaining the best possible result. A board certified plastic surgeon can help patients decide which approaches may be best for their unique situation and goals.
